LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Brittany Murphy and David Zayas have joined the cast of Sylvester Stallone's action feature "The Expendables."

The film -- which counts Stallone, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture among its cast -- follows a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.

Murphy will play Rourke's girlfriend, a singer. The part calls for her to perform a musical number.

Zayas will play the dictator.

Stallone wrote the screenplay and is directing the film, which began production this week in Brazil. The Nu Image/Millennium Films production also will lens in Louisiana.

Murphy ("Just Married," "Sin City") sang in the animated film "Happy Feet" and collaborated with Paul Oakenfold on the single "Faster Kill Pussycat."

Zayas is best known for his role as Angel Batista on Showtime's "Dexter." His feature credits include "Michael Clayton," "The Savages" and "The Interpreter."

Awesome!  Grin

I wonder, working as Mickey Rourke's girlfriend, do you think she'll be a "troubled" character like "Spun" or "The Dead Girl"? I mean, Mickey usually plays the tough guy with issues... Just a thought. I hope she's just not playing the "trophy" girlfriend. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

This will be released on August 13 but I don't think Brittany will be in it.

I wish they would restore her scenes out of respect. But I don't think they will.

It looks like Brittany is officially gone. I'll be missing this one, as well as Happy Feet 2.

Hemsworth Cut From Stallone's Expendables
7 hours ago

Miley Cyrus' new boyfriend Liam Hemsworth has been dumped - from Sylvester Stallone's new action movie.

The Aussie actor was among those dropped from all-star project The Expendables when writers decided they had too many characters.

The late Brittany Murphy was also cut.

Hemsworth tells the Sunday Herald Sun newspaper that at least he got the chance to speak to Stallone over the role: "I was at my friend’s house and I got a phone call from my Australian agent who had sent my tape in a few days before and he said, 'Stallone is going to call you in a few days,' and I went back into my buddy’s house and said, 'Rocky's gonna give me a call, no big deal.'

"He called a few days later and it was weird speaking to him on the phone in my house, while I am looking at his DVDs of Rocky and Rambo on the shelf."

But the character the action man hired him to play was one of six ultimately cut from the film.

It's not the first big role the Aussie star has lost - his big brother Chris beat him to the role of Thor in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming epic.

Who knows what's going on? Brittany's name suddenly reappears on the cast list at IMDb.

Yeah, but there's no name of her character so ...
I just think that IMDb is a bit slow xD

I am still very confused. Brittany did not appear on the IMDb cast list until today, now she is there but with no name listed for her character. All the latest news stories are saying she's been cut, but then why did IMDb add her to their list? It makes no sense and leaves me more confused than ever.

Another story saying Britt has been cut

Film : Aussie was Expendable
By Tim Johnson | March 21, 2010

Actor Liam Hemsworth, back in Australia to promote his latest movie The Last Song, tells The Sunday Herald Sun that he his next on-screen appearance should’ve been in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.

Hemsworth, like the late Brittany Murphy, was one a few actors hired for the production but ultimately let go once the film’s iconic writer/director realized his story was too big and had far too many characters.

Hemsworth will never forget the initial phone call with Stallone.

“I was at my friend’s house and I got a phone call from my Australian agent who had sent my tape in a few days before and he said, ‘Stallone is going to call you in a few days’ and I went back into my buddy’s house and said, ‘Rockys gonna give me a call, no big deal’.

“He called a few days later and it was weird speaking to him on the phone in my house while I am looking at his DVDs of Rocky and Rambo on the shelf”.

Hemsworth said the character Sly hired him for was one of six ultimately cut from the film.

Hemsworth’s next screen audition was also pretty dissapointing. He was considered for the titular role in Marvel’s Thor. That is, until, his brother Chris walked into the room.  Ultimately little bro lost to big bro.

This article, dated 29 May 2009, states that Brittany's character was written out. The big question is whether her character has been restored after her death. I still haven't found a definitive answer.

The Expendables: Brittany Murphy Written Out, Behind The Scenes Footage On The Way?
Posted on 29 May 2009

Some news in regards to Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables has surfaced. According to  the official blog of the film, it appears that a few rewrites have occurred and that Brittany Murphy’s character has been written out of the film. The good news is that we may soon see some behind-the-scenes footage from the film. An excerpt from blog post reads:

“The script went through a re-write and Brittany Murphy’s character was deleted.  there’s no teaser trailer yet but we do have 60 seconds of BTS footage I was hoping to post but there is some debate as to whether that helps or hurts the marketing and publicity plan by peaking interest too early.  I don’t understand that thought process – I see it differently…but I don’t call the shots.  So we shall see or rather you shall see, hopefully.”

The Expendables was written by Stallone, who is also set to direct the project. which focuses on a group of mercenaries heading to South America to overthrow a ruthless dictator.

The star-studded cast includes Randy Couture, Danny Trejo, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger (in a cameo as himself), and Eric Roberts. The Expendables is currently shooting principal photography, with a release date set tentatively for 2010.

I don't really know how I feel about Brittany getting cut from this film. This film could have probably given a much needed boost to her career. Let's face it, this movie is bound to get some attention when it's released, because of the cast alone. On the other hand though, I'm almost sure her role in this wasn't that great and she deserved so much more.

Now she's not with us anymore, I don't know how to react to this. I would love to see her performance of course but... I just don't know. One thing I know though, I wouldn't be too happy to see her become more popular now than when she was alive. It's known to happen however. It would be a travesty to see the same people, now telling how amazing she was, who had before told and made up these nasty rumours about her and her loved ones when she was alive. Trying to exploit her even when she's dead. Only way I can even begin to accept that is, if the Brittany Foundation and Sharon get the benefits, that's the only way.
